Krauthammer: "Thought Police on Patrol"

From the April 11, 2014 National Post, an important column by Charles Krauthammer about the totalitarianism of the left:
WASHINGTON — Two months ago, a petition bearing more than 110,000 signatures was delivered to The Washington Post demanding a ban on any article questioning global warming. The petition arrived the day before publication of my column, which consisted of precisely that heresy.
The column ran as usual. But I was gratified by the show of intolerance because it perfectly illustrated my argument that the left is entering a new phase of ideological agitation — no longer trying to win the debate but stopping debate altogether, banishing from public discourse any and all opposition.
The proper word for that attitude is totalitarian. It declares certain controversies over and visits serious consequences — from social ostracism to vocational defenestration — upon those who refuse to be silenced.
He also discusses the firing of Brendan Eich, and points out that this is part of the totalitarian pattern.  Watching gay activists continue to vigorously defend Mozilla's actions on this is a reminder that we are fast approaching the Gleichschaltung of the early years of the Third Reich, where those who were not prepared to accept the Political Correctness of National Socialist ideology, or were considered racially un-German were forced out of teaching positions and the law.  Those who had businesses were destroyed by boycotts organized by the German government and acts of vandalism.  It is clear that the Gaystapo will stop at nothing short of forcing every Christian in America to either smile stupidly and pretend to approve of homosexuality, or be forced out of business.

  1. Picking a fight where you're outnumbered and out-armed usually doesn't end well for the fight picker.
